AI Is Changing Online Harm. Child Safety Can No Longer Be an Afterthought.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the internet at an extraordinary pace. It is making learning more accessible, creativity more powerful, and communication easier than ever before. But alongside these opportunities comes a reality we cannot ignore: AI is also changing how children experience online harm.
Today, harmful content can be created faster, spread further, and target children more precisely than ever before. What once took hours to produce can now be generated in seconds. Deepfakes, AI-generated bullying messages, manipulated images, voice cloning, and highly personalized scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making them harder for parents, teachers, and even technology companies to detect.
The question is no longer whether AI will affect children’s online safety.
The question is whether we are prepared.
A New Generation of Digital Risks
Children are growing up in a world where AI is becoming part of everyday life. They use it for homework, entertainment, creativity, and social interaction. While these technologies can unlock incredible opportunities, they also introduce risks that many families are not yet equipped to understand.
AI is making it possible to:
- Generate convincing fake images or videos of children.
- Create cyberbullying messages at scale.
- Produce harmful or manipulative content that targets vulnerable young people.
- Clone voices for scams and deception.
- Personalize grooming and exploitation attempts using publicly available information.
These threats are evolving much faster than our digital safety education, policies, and protective systems.
Child Safety Must Be Built Into Technology
For too long, child protection has been treated as something added after products are launched.
That approach no longer works.
Children should not have to rely solely on parental controls or report buttons after harm has already occurred.
Instead, digital platforms should be designed from the beginning with children’s rights in mind.
This means:
- Privacy settings that protect children by default.
- AI systems tested for child safety before deployment.
- Strong age-appropriate design standards.
- Built-in protections against grooming, exploitation, and cyberbullying.
- Transparent reporting systems that are easy for children and parents to use.
- Responsible AI development that considers children’s wellbeing from the design stage.
Safety should never be an optional feature.
It should be the foundation.
Parents and Schools Cannot Do It Alone
Parents play a critical role, but expecting families to keep pace with rapidly changing AI technologies is unrealistic.
Schools also face growing pressure to teach digital literacy while navigating new AI tools themselves.
Protecting children online requires a shared responsibility involving:

- Governments
- Educators
- Parents and caregivers
- Civil society organizations
- Young people themselves
Everyone has a role in creating a safer digital environment.
